Business and Industry at a Glance
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, there are
11 major industries in Levelland and Hockley County. They include: Agriculture, Mining (includes petroleum), Construction,Manufacturing, Transportation, Communication and Public Utilities, Trade, Finance, Insurance and Real Estate, Service and Other Government Entities, Local, State and Federal.
These industries employ more than 11,000 civilian employees and pay out more than $176 million in total annual wages.
Petroleum Production at a Glance
Hockley County is the state's fifth-ranked crude oil producing county. In 1982, the county became the sixth county in Texas to celebrate production of its billionth barrel of oil. The county produced more than 26 million barrels in 1995, ranking it fifth in the state in oil production. Petroleum production directly employs 18 percent of the county's workforce.
Health Care at a Glance
Levelland boasts an excellent medical community with 15 board certified physicians ranging in specialty from internal medicine to pediatrics/neonatology. Levelland has three (3) fully staffed clinics and a weekend clinic that offer excellent services. Covenant Hospital Levelland, a 48-bed general acute hospital that is a part of the Covenant Hospital System, offers a wide range of services including a 24-hour emergency room, maternity services, physical therapy,mammography, inpatient/outpatient surgical services, respiratory therapy and nutritional care services.
Levelland EMS provides emergency service with three mobile intensive care vehicles available round the clock. Helicopter services are also available with a landing pad located at the hospital.
Levelland also has two nursing home facilities, an assisted
living center and a variety of in-home health care services. And for additional care, Lubbock is just 25 miles away, providing the largest health care center between Dallas and Los Angeles.
Agriculture at a Glance
Agriculture is big business in Hockley County. The county, with cotton as its major crop, ranks fifth in cotton production in
the state and produces about 1 percent of the nation's cotton. The county harvested more than 226,000 bales in 2002, according to figures provided by the Texas Agricultural Statistics Service. More than 60 percent of the county's land area is planted in cotton, sorghum, peanuts and wheat each year.
South Plains College
Levelland is home to South Plains College, one of the nation's top-ranked two-year community colleges. SPC attracts both traditional college-age students and adults who are returning to college. SPC has 42 academic transfer programs in 22 disciplines which parallel baccalaureate programs at area universities. Students can earn an associate of arts or associate of science degree through the Division of the Arts and Sciences. SPC also offers associate degree and certificate options in 40 technical training programs.
For the past 40 years the college has been a mainstay of Levelland's economy and is the second-largest employer in the Hockley County area.
Financial Institutions at a Glance
Levelland has a strong banking system, with five banks in town and assets in excess of $2 billion. Banks are American State Bank, Bank One Texas NA, Citizens Bank, City Bank, and Sundown State Bank. The city also has two credit unions, Hockley County School Employees Credit Union, Alliance Federal Credit Union, First Ag Credit and Ag Texas Farm Credit.
Job Stats
Hockley County has a civilian labor force of more than 11,000 workers. Top 22 employers are Levelland Public Schools, Key Drilling, Levelland Nursing Home, Boggs Manufacturing, Amoco Pipeline, Musslewhite Trucking, City of Levelland, Covenant Hospital Levelland, South Plains Community Action, Hockley County, South Plains College, WalMart, ChevronTexaco, Bank One, Oxy., Rink's Lease Service, Levelland Development Center and others. They employ nearly 3,000 people. Levelland Public Schools is the city's largest employer, with over 500 employees.
Worker Training at a Glance
Levelland has access to an extensive worker training system. South Plains College is a major site for technical training, as well
as academic education. SPC maintains a campus at Levelland and extension centers in Lubbock and a site near the former Reese Air Force Base, plus training at the Advanced Technology Center in Lubbock. Training programs range from nursing to agribusiness to electronics manufacturing technology and micro computing. SPC
has also provided training programs for textile plants and cotton
gins, in electronics, oil field safety, welding, management and even conversational Spanish.
Levelland also has a Texas Workforce Center, which provides recruitment, screening, testing and evaluation with little or no cost
to the employer.
