Levelland Music Scene

Entertainment legends are the backdrop of Levelland music. Country music legends like Tom T. Hall and Redd Stewart have
performed here. More recently, instructors like John Hartin and Cary Banks are grabbing Walk of Fame notice. Nashville calibre
studios and performance facilities attract more than up and coming talent who may be the next star you hear on the radio or see on CMT. Levelland has become a magnet for performers and professors.
Former students of the Creative Arts Department are working in concert halls, recording studios and behind the scenes in technical capacities from Los Angeles to Nashville. Several students have signed major label recording contracts. They include Heath Wright, lead singer of Ricochet; the 1997 Country Music Association Horizon Award winner Lee Ann Womack; the 1998 Country Music Association Horizon Award winner Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, whose album, "Wide Open Spaces" recently went platinum. Ricky Turpin from Asleep at the Wheel and Ron Block from the
Allison Krause Band and many others. Two SPC music professors, Alan Munde and Joe Carr, have produced an original musical comedy, "Two Swell Guys from Texas," that tours regionally. Alan Munde, Joe Carr, and Ed Marsh are three of the top names in the world of bluegrass. Local "Jam Sessions", festivals and events flourish with music, from
jam nights at a local burger joint,
to Thursday Night Live, to South Plains Opry, to the Hot Burrito & Bluegrass Festival. There's always plenty of great music in Levelland. One local company creates training tapes and videos for nearly every instrument you can imagine. These tapes are selling all around the world, building on the same foundation of extraordinary talent found in this area.
Thursday Nite LiveSouth Plains College's Creative Arts Department hosts Thursday Nite Live, a live musical variety television show broadcast the first Thursday of each month during the fall and spring on SPC-TV, cable channel 10, a local cable channel. The show is performed in the Tom T. Hall Production Studio on the SPC campus and is free to the public. The show features cream-of-the-crop singers and musicians from SPC's commercial music program and special guests. A live audience is always welcome.
