Experience the Cowboy Way of LifeThe elements of the cowboy way of life live on in Levelland. Buy a real cowboy hat or a pair of boots, eat a "chicken fried steak", look for prairie dogs, and listen to some authentic cowboy music or poetry.
Tour the Tom T. Hall Production Studio
& Heath Wright Rehearsal Hall
South Plains College is home of the Tom T. Hall Production Studio, a Nashville style state-of-the-art recording and production facility, where country music legends such as Tom T. Hall himself and Redd Stewart have performed. The heart of this creativity is one of the most unusual music training programs in the world--a degree program in commercial music at SPC, where young music enthusiasts from all over the world come to learn more about country, jazz, bluegrass, rhythm and blues and other styles of popular music. They can also get hands-on training in related programs in sound technology and performing arts technology, which utilize the facilities in the Tom T. Hall Recording Studio and other top-notch recording studios on campus. To arrange for group tours of scheduled events, contact the Chamber of Commerce at (806) 894-3157.
Levelland - City of MosaicsLevelland has nine fine mosaics throughout the city and is known as a "City of Mosaics." A mosaic is a 6000-year-old art technique in which cubes of glass tile are fixed in a pattern to make a work of art. The mosaics in town can be found at the Fine Arts Building, Student Services Building, and Science-Agriculture Buildings at South Plains College, Methodist Hospital, Levelland Clinic, Adult Learning Center, Hockley County Library and the Levelland Area Chamber of Commerce. See City Map for locations.
Art ExhibitsLevelland is the site of a rare art treasure--a small but impressive collection of classic art pieces donated by Marjorie Merriwether Post, the daughter of cereal magnate C.W. Post, to South Plains College. The collection features outstanding works from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Works include notable portraits by Joshua Reynolds and Alan Ramsey. The collection provides an invaluable resource for studying the styles and techniques of different eras. The works of art can be viewed in the foyer of SPC's Library and in the Fine Arts Building on SPC's Levelland campus. Private and group tours are available by contacting the Chamber of Commerce at (806) 894-3157.
Downtown Square, Gazebo and Honor Walkway
The Gazebo and Hockley County Honor Walkway on the Courthouse Square in downtown Levelland was a building project
of the Chamber of Commerce to recognize the achievements of the past and provide a cultural center for the future. The Honor Walkway consists of granite paving tiles leading up to the gazebo and features the names of people and events important to Hockley County. Tiles placed between the two walkways actually tell the interesting history of Levelland through the years. A replica of an authentic windmill also graces the downtown square.
Ranches, Oil Wells and Prairie Dogs
Every out-of-towner should view the site of hundreds of oil wells pumping. A ride west on Highway 114 can take you by a good view. A drive further into rich oil land will have you "gasping" at the curious critters slipping into their holes in the ground they call home.
If you are coming in on Highway 114, you will see a Texas historic marker pointing you to the Spade Ranch. A working ranch since 1889, cowboys still work the cattle you see grazing nearly up to the road. Windmills are spotted throughout the land that offers a view of the most beautiful sunsets in the world! Other legendary ranches include The Mallet and the mighty XIT ranch lands.
Visit a LibraryChoose from more than 35,000 books at the Hockley County Memorial Library. South Plains College Library also offers more than 75,000 books.
