Levelland-Oxy Sports Complex
In May of 2010, Levelland voters approved a Type B economic development sales tax for the purpose of one day building a multi-purpose outdoor sports complex that would accommodate baseball, softball, soccer, and football. This in turn resulted in the creation of the Levelland Community Development Corporation (LCDC), made up of a seven member board appointed by the Levelland City Council to oversee the development of the Levelland-Oxy Sport complex. The new recreational facility is currently being constructed immediately north of the Mallet event Center & Arena, a multi-purpose event center that opened in 2012, on State Highway 385 and Equalizer Road in Levelland. In addition, Occidental Petroleum Corporation (Oxy) purchased the property and donated it to the Cit for the development of the Levelland-Oxy Sports Complex.
In October of 2011 the City of Levelland entered into a contract with Parkhill, Smith, & Cooper Inc (PSC) to design the Levelland-Oxy Sports Complex. PSC has worked very closely with the City staff and Levelland Community Development Corporation board members to design a conceptual master plan in addition to a detailed phase one. In December of 2013 Lee Lewis Construction, construction manager for the City, began construction of the new recreational facility.
Phase one of the Levelland-Oxy Sports Complex will consist of quad made up of four combination baseball and softball fields with the ability to accommodate up to 12 year baseball and any age softball. In addition, phase one includes three full size combination soccer and football fields to accommodate any age soccer and football. There will be centralized concession and restroom for the baseball and softball fields. Lastly, the project will have a parking lot with approximately 580 spaces, a playground, and two large pavilions. Construction of the Levelland-Oxy sports Complex is expected to be completed in February 2015.
